Athos – or Mount Athos, as it is popularly known – is the spiritual capital of Orthodoxy. On Athos there are 20 monasteries, 15 hermitages and about 700 huts and cells or hermitages, which are inhabited by about two thousand monks. The “Orchard of the Virgin Mary” is the paradise of the eastern peninsula of Halkidiki.
The monastic state of Mount Athos is the most important body of Orthodox Christianity, as it stands out for its spiritual superiority and its long history. The religious community with its 1,000-year-old monasteries, its cells hidden in caves, perched on rocks, its towers, domes, bell towers, hymns is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
